Look ma, no filters!

Today we review three filter-free, also known as no filter humidifiers. When researching air purifiers and humidifiers, the cost of replacement parts and filters is always a point to be aware of. Operating without a filter greatly reduces maintenance and the cost of upkeep on these appliances. Surprisingly, one of the models does not immediately advertise that it is a no filter humidifier.

Since these humidifiers do not use filters it is very important to keep them clean and use either distilled or filtered water. You can use unfiltered water though. In this case make sure to change your water every few days and disinfect the humidifier tank. Check out our cost efficient cleaning guide that only requires vinegar and water to keep you humidifier running cleanly.

Maintaining an ideal humidity level in your homes helps reduce static electricity build up. It also helps keep throat and nasal passages hydrated during cold and flu season. The humidifiers we review today are suitable for most rooms in your home and should help with these problems. Read on to find out which one gets named top dog in the contest for best no filter humidifier.

Sunbeam Cool Mist Impeller Humidifier

This model features the longest run time and largest capacity of any we review today. However, it does not win first place.

Pros:

The tank capacity is just over a gallon giving this unit an astounding 28 hour run time. This is almost triple runtime of the other units that clock in at 10 hours.
The appliance is infused with Microban antimicrobial protection helping prevent the growth of bacteria. This is common and you may find Microban on your computer’s keyboard or mouse.

Cons:

This unit does not have an automatic shut off feature. This is important because the long run time will make refilling easy to forget about.
It only comes in white. You may need to compromise your home décor for the comfort that properly humidified air brings.
The item is not currently eligible for shipping outside the United States.

Honeywell HUL520W Mistmate Cool Mist Humidifier

The Honeywell HUL520W is our second cool mist humidifier we review today. One of the convenient features is that it has visible cool mist. This way you can easily direct the mist away from walls and furniture and into the center of your room. It comes in a variety of colors so you can find a good match for the surrounding environment. This model is small enough to fit on your desk at work or on a nightstand next to your bed. The manufacturer recommends the use of Protec Cleaning Cartridges to help continuously clean and protect your humidifier against bacteria and mold for up to 30 days.
Unlike the Sunbeam humidifier, the Honeywell HUL250W is available for international shipping outside the United States. If you’re preparing for winter in Canada, this humidifier might be the one you’ve been searching for.

Pros:

This humidifier has variable output allowing you to adjust how much water it puts into the air.
The mist it puts out is visible so you can easily tell when it’s on.
It has a large enough tank for 20 hours of operation on the lowest setting. When the tank is empty, it automatically shuts itself off.
The tank is very easy to clean.

Cons:

It can only effectively treat the air in smaller rooms. Compared to other models that are the same size, the area this humidifier treats is normal.
The Honeywell version of this product does not offer the scent diffusion options that the Vicks version does. Read on to see if this is one of the important features that you’ve been looking for.

Vicks Vul520w Filter-free Cool Mist Humidifier

In case the names didn’t give it away, Vicks Vul520w Filter-free humidifier and Honeywell HUL520W are very similar. The final no filter humidifier we go over today is a Vicks product. It is designed to work with their Vicks VapoPads by way of an integrated scent pad heater. Vicks recommends the VSP-19 VapoPad for soothing menthol vapors and the VBR-5 for a calming sleepy time lavender and rosemary scent.

Pros:

The humidifier is designed to also work with Vicks VapoPad products. This can add an extra avenue of relief for cold and flu symptoms that a humidifier provides.
Some people also find that lavender helps them fall asleep easier. The lavender and rosemary scented VapoPads might be just what you need to wind down from a long day.
The cool mist makes it safer to use in your child’s room compared to a warm mist humidifier.

Cons:

The added capability of the Vicks VapoPads does increase the price over the Honeywell HUL250W. If you want to use the VapoPads, this is definitely worth it. If you don’t see yourself using the VapoPads then go back to the Honeywell for the same capabilities.

No Filter Humidifiers Summary:

Using a no filter humidifier can save you money on maintenance costs and filters. It can add to the time you will need to spend cleaning the humidifier though.

Today we reviewed the Sunbeam Cool Mist Humidifier, the Honeywell HUL520W Mistmate Cool Mist Humidifier and the Vicks Vul520w Filter-free Cool Mist humidifier. The Honeywell HUL520W earns our recommendation in these comparisons. The Vicks Vul520W does have some added features at a higher cost.

Before you make your decision make sure to check out our cost efficient cleaning guide that only requires vinegar and water to keep you humidifier running cleanly. There are also products that are specifically designed to demineralize and disinfect your humidifier.
