Today we are going to talk about some of the differences and similarities between essential oil diffusers and candles. Right off the bat we will need to briefly talk about some of the different kinds of essential oil diffusers. If you want a more in-depth explanation check out this link here. There are four general types of essential oil diffusers: nebulizers, ultrasonic diffusers, Reed diffusers and essential oil burners. These all have different advantages, disadvantages and features. The thing that they all have in common with candles though is that they can add pleasant aromas to the space you are using them in. Later on in this article we go into advantages each of these can offer.
Customize Your Scent
The single biggest advantage that any kind of essential oil diffuser has over a candle is the ability to customize the scent. Essential oils can be combined in whatever ratio you would like. This leads to an incredible number of possibilities. Scented candles on the other hand come as they are from the manufacturer. Technically it’s possible to make your own scented candles but it can be a long process. Mixing different essential oils is simple. They come in small containers and can be measured in quantities as small as a single drop.
Most people looking to gain therapeutic benefits from essential oils rely on reed diffusers, nebulizers or ultrasonic diffusers. These types of diffusers allow the oils to be diffused without compromising their properties. Essential oil burners and candles on the other hand rely on heat to diffuse their aromas. Adding heat increases the chances of destroying essential oils or other therapeutic compounds. If you are using a scented candle this probably isn’t a major concern in the first place. Essential oil burners however, do present a problem if you are looking for therapeutic benefits from your essential oils.
Portable Diffusers and Candles
Essential oil burners, candles and reed diffusers all operate without needing to be plugged in. If the placement of your diffuser or candle is an issue, these might be your best solution. Reed diffusers are perhaps the best solution since they can be placed without worrying about an open flame or access to a wall outlet. They do require the use of a carrier oil though. Carrier oils, like jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil, are readily available and come with detailed mixing instructions. Some carrier oils have their own therapeutic properties and scents as well, adding yet another set of possibilities when crafting a unique scent for your space.
Types of Essential Oil Diffusers
As we mentioned earlier, reed diffusers, nebulizers and ultrasonic diffusers allow essential oils to be diffused without compromising their properties. Reed diffusers do require mixing the essential oil with a carrier oil. Ultrasonic diffusers mix the essential oils with atomized water. Nebulizers only use compressed air to diffuse essential oils.
Hopefully we have provided you with enough information to make an informed choice when deciding between and essential oil diffuser and a candle. If you have any additional questions or perhaps your own recommendations, please leave a comment in the space below.
